We have all done it. We have taken something someone said, something we’ve heard,
or something we, ourselves, want to believe, and taken it for truth without knowing
the facts. We will even go to extreme of believing our own untruths. During the last
presidential election, we heard a new term from the media to keep the candidates and
what they said honest: fact checkers. The word alone implies that people lie, and people
believe lies. The question is, why?
1. We have a sinful nature: The Garden of Eden
READ GENESIS 3: 1-5
the serpent lied to Eve
he contradicted God’s word
Eve made a choice. She could have believed God or the devil.
WE HAVE THE SAME CHOICE TODAY! WE CAN BELIEVE A LIE OR BELIEVE
2. We believe our own lies
a. My own lie: I’M NOT FAT
READ 2ND SAMUEL 11 AND 12
b. David’s lie
David lied to himself when he stayed at home instead of going to battle, as he should
have. He lied to himself, when he saw Bathsheeba from his rooftop. He lied to himself
when he slept with her. He lied to himself when he sent Bathsheeba’s husband, Uriah, to
the front of the battle lines, so he would be killed. He lied when the prophet confronted
When the prophet told the story about the selfish man who stole the sheep, David was so
angry. Nathan said, “Thou art the man!” In all this ugly tragedy the king not only lied to
himself, he lied to God.
FRIENDS, DON’T EVER THINK YOU ARE GETTING AWAY WITH YOUR
LIES. YOU MAY FOOL YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND MAYBE EVEN YOUR
ENEMIES. YOU CAN NEVER FOOL GOD!
c. Don’t think that lies won’t cost you
3. Let’s consider Judas Iscariot
a. Matthew 26: 14 talks about how Judas literally bought the life of Jesus for 30
pieces of silver (at the time my commentary was written, about $20). From that
time on, Judas looked for a way to deliver Jesus to the chief priests. As the Last
Supper was taking place, Jesus told the 12 what was going to happen. When Judas
asked, “Is it I?” knowing it was, Jesus said, “Thou hast said.”
b. In Matthew 27, Judas begins to realize what he has done. In desperation he takes
the money back to the priests. They won’t take it. Then he begins to be sorrowful.
IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO BE SORROWFUL! YOU MUST REPENT BEFORE
Then, Judas goes out, not being able to live with what he did, and hung himself. Jesus
said earlier, that it would have been better that he hadn’t been born than to betray the
Son of God.
4. How do I keep from lying to myself and to others?
Study God’s Word
Go to Church
Be honest with yourself and others
JOHN 4:23 AND 24 SAYS, “BUT THE HOUR COMETH, AND NOW IS, WHEN
TRUE WORSHIPPERS SHALL WORSHIP THE FATHER IN SPIRIT AND IN
TRUTH, FOR THE FATHER SEEKETH SUCH TO WORSHIP HIM. (God is looking
for you! He wants commune with you.) GOD IS A SPIRIT: AND THEY THAT
WORSHIP HIM MUST WORSHIP HIM IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH.”
5. Jesus is our example: MATT. 4: 1-11
a. Jesus was led to be tempted
THE WAY TO OVERCOME TEMPTATION IS TO CONFRONT IT HEAD-ON!
b. he fasted for 40 days and nights
c. How did Jesus defend himself?
WITH THE WORD OF GOD!!
d. What did the devil do?
HE MADE PROMISES HE COULDN’T KEEP!
Verse 6 says he asked Jesus to commit suicide. Jesus fought with the Word.
In verse 9 he promised to give Jesus the kingdoms of the world and all their glory. Who
owns the earth and all it’s fullness?
In verse 10, Jesus said, “Get the hence, satan: for it is written, ‘Thou shalt worship the
Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.’”
THIS IS WHAT WE NEED TO DO!! WE COMMAND THE DEVIL TO LEAVE US
USING GOD’S WORD AS OUR WEAPON.
READ EPHESIANS 6: 13-17
In closing, we saw how David’s lies entangled him in a messy web of sin. Judas may
have believed he was doing Jesus a favor. He was doing the devil’s work. In the end he
lost his life by his own hands. Both of these men believed their own lies. It cost them
dearly. You don’t have to suffer the same fate. You can truly repent and turn to the Lord,
who is Truth.
